Asian Project Market
20th Asian Project Market Selects 28 Official Projects:
new projects from world-renowned directors and transnational co-production
The Asian Project Market (APM), the biggest investment and co-production market in Asia, announced 28 official projects for 2017. APM has been a stepping stone for directors and introduces various new projects to the industry from beyond Asia as well as provides opportunities for significant investments and co-productions. Over the past 19 years, a total of 499 projects have been selected with more than 220 of these projects realized into films through the Asian Project Market.
The number of 317 projects applied for APM 2017!
A total of 28 projects from 17 countries have been selected as official projects for APM 2017. Applicants have to go through a fierce competition to reach the final because the number of projects that applied for APM has increased almost 25% over the previous year. Numerous projects were accepted from India (60) and Japan (35), which have firm footholds in filmmaking. However, even countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar were able to submit many well-organized projects and raise expectations for future projects despite a relatively small footing in film production. Considering the practicality of projects and discovering new projects, APM tries to evenly present various projects from around the world.
Transnational co-production being on the rise!
Active co-production between the East and the West features the Asian Project Market 2017. Min Bahadur Bham, a leading director of Nepalese indie films and Catherine Dussart, a famous French producer collaborated in the film A Year of Cold and created a synergy between an experienced producer with networking ability and a talented Asian director. Catherine Dussart has worked for a long time with director Rithy Panh, the winner of The Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the 2013 Busan International Film Festival. In addition, participation by Michael J. Werner (an American producer who has built his career in China) in the Hong Kong project SUK SUK, arouses great expectations.
New projects of world-renowned directors!
It is remarkable to see new projects of world-famous directors in the Asian Project Market 2017. Director Yoon Gaeun, who was invited to the Berlin Film Festival's Generation competition, and director Oh Seung-uk, whose film The Shameless was invited to Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival, will visit this year’s APM with their new projects Sora and GASOLINE. The new projects Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous by director Wissam Charaf whose first feature film was selected by ACID in Cannes and The Pass by director Siddiq Barmak, the winner of Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004, can also be seen. This year’s APM will also be more animated with director Riri Riza and Nontawat Numbenchapol in attendance.
The APM 2017 presents these new projects for 3 days starting Sunday, October 15 to Tuesday, October 17 at the BEXCO Exhibition Center II.
